Healthy Relationships?

Agenda

Day 1: Digital story introduction, the teacher will present the digital story in class for the students to take notes. The students will begin by brainstorming their personal definitions of healthy and unhealthy family relationships. Secondly, as they are listening to the digital story, students will record what characteristics they believe are positive and negative characteristics. Concluding the digital story, students will write a 2 paragraphs (1 paragraph for positive characteristics and 1 paragraph for negative characteristics) explaining why they categorized the characteristics the way that they did.

Day 2: The teacher will briefly review what was covered yesterday in class and introduce the objectives for today’s class. Next, the students will review the previous day’s worksheet and discuss the answers with a shoulder partner. After the discussion, the teacher will present a PowerPoint about what constitutes a healthy family relationship and how a person can show that he/she has a positive influence on a relationship. Concluding the PowerPoint there will be a class discussion about healthy family relationships and healthy relationships in general. To ensure that everyone is contributing to the different class discussion, the teacher will randomly pull names from a bowl.

Day 3: Students will be paired into groups of 2-3 to answer 3-5 scenario/reflective questions. Each group will have different scenarios so that we can discuss them after the activity. The scenarios will allow students to challenge their own beliefs about positive and negative characteristics of family relationships and relationships among non-relatives. After students complete their scenario “jigsaw” activity, the groups will explain their scenario to the class and we will discuss any differences or agreements.
